    Parasite awareness for your dog!

Australia’s climate is paradise for parasites. Warm temperatures and humidity allow fleas, ticks and intestinal worms to increase during the year. As the seasons change, parasite risks change too, and adjusting your dog’s prevention routine accordingly can help protect their health in more balanced natural way. Given the severity of parasites in Australia we believe a holistic approach is often best when tackling parasites. For pet parents wanting to ensure their dogs safety – we have a list of preventative measures which can be combined with traditional treatments to help keep your doggo’s safe this year.

Spring–Summer: When Fleas & Ticks Take Over

In the warmer months, roughly September to March, fleas and ticks are in full force, particularly along Australia’s east coast. Here are some natural strategies to focus on alongside traditional medications:

    • Daily coat checks. Run your fingers through your dog’s fur after walks or time in the bush or park. Early detection helps prevent attachment turning into infestation. Australian Pet Organics Skin, Coat & Nail Oil supplement can support healthy skin and a glossy coat in dogs of all ages.

    • Organic flea-repelling sprays. Look for sprays based on plant oils such as neem, cedarwood or lemon- eucalyptus. These can help repel fleas and ticks – however we also recommend using a tick and flea prevention alongside this as an additional precaution.

    • Frequent home maintenance. Vacuum and wash your dog’s bedding regularly to disrupt the flea life cycle, and clean blankets/toys after park visits or outdoor fabric exposure.

Tip: Use a fine-tooth flea comb weekly, it’s a simple, low-cost way to catch early signs before fleas or ticks gain a foothold. Regular skin checks are just as important—here’s why checking and caring for your dog’s skin matters.

Autumn–Winter: Time to Focus on Worms

As the weather cools and dogs spend more time indoors or closer to other animals, internal parasites become more prominent and intestinal worms can spread more easily. Here some natural ideas to combine with worming methods:

    • Organic pumpkin seeds (raw, un-salted) added occasionally to meals — pumpkin seeds are often cited for their natural deworming potential, due to a compound called cucurbitacin, which may help paralyse intestinal worms, so they are expelled.

    • Pro- & pre-biotic support for gut health. Maintaining healthy gut flora can make your dog’s digestive system less welcoming to worms. A daily supplement designed to support gut balance, such as the Australian Pet Organics Digestive Health Supplement — can play a supportive role alongside good hygiene and seasonal monitoring.

    • Strict hygiene habits. Clean up droppings promptly; disinfect food bowls, toys, bedding and any shared indoor surfaces regularly.

    • Vet-supervised faecal tests each season rather than simply rotating deworming drugs blindly, worm loads often build silently, and testing helps you make informed decisions.

Note: While natural dewormers like pumpkin seeds are popular, science is still limited on their consistent efficacy. Many vets still recommend conventional dewormers for reliable protection.
